bullet Should I only protect the parts of my home that are at the most risk?

It is a common misconception that you can protect your home from a hurricane force storm by only installing hurricane shutters on the most vulnerable parts of your home.  In reality if even one very small window or door was to be blown out by a storm, the integrity off all of your openings, protected or not, would be compromised.  It is also important to know that even if your home is placed very close to the home next door, that you still need to protect the windows and doors in between the houses.  Winds will accelerate through those tight corridors and are capable of causing even more damage than areas exposed to open water!  The truth is the only real way to protect your home completely is to get hurricane protection for every opening on your home.  It is also a fact that you will only get the insurance discount if all openings are protected.

bullet How much do they actually protect?

In recent years there have been many upgrades made to the expected standards of hurricane protection.  Standard building codes require that a product can withstand 110 M.P.H. winds. The newest requirements, known as ASCE-7-88, increase the wind-load requirements and add a positive and negative wind load test, a positive and negative "cycling test", and an "impact test". The new standards are more strict and are more expensive to meet, but do provide a very high level of protection. The only Florida counties that have officially accepted many of the new standards are Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties.  The State of Florida also now requires effective 6-1-2001, storm shutters on all new construction within the coastal zone designation.
